Press Statement by MCA Central Committee member Sdr Loh Seng Kok (Deputy Chairman of Publicity Bureau) responding to Pakatan Rakyat's compromise on PAS' Islamic state

MCA to Pakatan Rakyat – Why did you sacrifice the rights of non-Muslims in your compromise on the Islamic state issue?

While it is no secret that PAS has never wavered from its mission to establish an Islamic state should the Opposition ever seize federal office, the latest report that PAS President Dato' Seri Hadi Awang revealed that "Pakatan Rakyat has reached a compromise on the implementation of the Islamic state concept when the coalition comes to power" (

The Star, 22 Mar 11) shows that DAP and PKR are willing to sell out their non-Muslim voters just to keep their alliance with PAS alive to win any election at all costs.

The reluctance by PKR and DAP in condemning PAS' latest move of starting a crackdown against outlets selling lottery tickets in Kota Bharu shows their absolute disregard against respecting human rights and the freedom to make personal choices as enshrined in the Federal Constitution just to placate PAS.

Observing the containment by other Pakatan Rakyat chieftains to prevent the fallout of Kelantan's anti-gambling raids from blowing over to other states, it is so obvious that the Opposition's so-called alliance shares no common ideology. It is loosely formed simply to attack Barisan Nasional for their personal aims to wrest Putrajaya.

Penang DAP Chief Minister YB Lim Guan Eng's claim that Hadi Awang's remarks "maybe PAS' individual policy, but not Pakatan's" is a shallow excuse. How may Pakatan Rakyat function properly and stably at federal level when its partners are at odds with each other, but DAP and PKR cannot oppose PAS' moves? It is apparent that PAS unilaterally dictates public policy without consulting its partners and DAP and PKR are too fearful to chastise PAS and are unable to undo PAS' actions.

I challenge DAP and PKR to come up with a viable solution in the Kelantan's case where the local authorities have violated federal laws which permits licenced gambling. If DAP and PKR are unable to handle and deal with PAS at the state level, then both these parties are mere agents to PAS' hardline laws which ultimately will be detrimental to both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
