Prosthetic leg for SS19 resident

Posted: 17 Jan 2012 09:39 AM PST

Amputee gets prosthetic leg from Yeoh

By AIDA AHMAD and ELLORA CHUA

AMPUTEE and father of seven children, Mohd Noor Busin can now look forward to walking and moving around freely without the aid of a wheelchair.

Mohd Noor, 68, who lost his leg in July last year due to diabetic complications, received his new prosthetic limb from Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh at his home in SS19 recently.
"I first saw Mohd Noor when we carried out a gotong-royong project in the area. He had applied to get a prosthetic leg from the Social Welfare Department but there was no feedback," said Yeoh.
Mohd Noor's children went to get a quotation from a clinic for the prosthetic leg and were faced with a RM7,990 bill.
Much needed assistance: Yeoh (second from left) with the artificial leg her office donated to amputee Mohd Noor. With them are Jamal Mohamed (left) and Mohd Noor's daughters, Hamidah (in pink) and Hummida.
"His children managed to save up RM2,000 which was not enough.
"My office offered to donate the balance of RM5,990 for Mohd Noor to have his leg in time for his son's wedding in December," Yeoh said.
She urged the Welfare Department to speed up cases such as these in future to lessen the burden of people with disabilities because the cost of prosthetic limbs is very expensive.
Mohd Noor's daughters, Nor Hamidah, 17, and Nor Hummida, 19, are very happy that their father can finally move around without the wheelchair.
"I'm very thankful for the prosthetic leg. I hope that when my father gets used to walking with the prosthetic leg and is able to take care of himself again, my older sister can find a job to help our family," said Hamidah.
At the moment, Hummida stays at home to take care of her father.
"I am very happy because things will be easier now, not just for myself but for my other family members and my father as well.
"I am also very thankful for Yeoh's help because we appealed to the Welfare Department in August but got a very late response.
"Now that my father has a prosthetic leg, I am at ease. He can go the toilet and bathe without having to sit in a wheelchair now," said Hummida.
SS19 Rukun Tetangga chairman Jamal Mohamed also thanked Yeoh for helping Mohd Noor.
"We are very appreciative of her for coming to our aid," he said.

Najib More Concerned About KR1M Profits

Posted: 17 Jan 2012 08:43 AM PST

I read with both amusement and consternation the Prime Minister's statement on Bernama yesterday that "the ridicule and criticism hurled by the opposition at the 1Malaysia Shops (KR1M) has helped to raise sales at the outlets."

Dato' Seri Najib Razak even goaded the opposition to make more criticisms, "I would like to encourage them (the opposition) to carry on with their criticism" when visiting his own constituency of Pekan where KR1M has been opened for a month.

It is hence clear that the Prime Minister is not the least bothered about the health and welfare of ordinary Malaysians, not even that of his own constituents.

The criticisms coming from Pakatan Rakyat on KR1M is regardless of whether the store sales go up or down. The criticisms are made on the issue of whether the Government's subsidies are being used to profit particular businessmen, whether consumers are being fleeced or their health compromised.

The Minister of Health, Dato' Seri Liow Tiong Lai has confirmed that the 1Malaysia Fresh Milk, which was sold significantly cheaper by KR1M compared to other retail stores, was contaminated with the Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria which is the cause of food poisoning and occasional deaths.

The Ministry of Health has also confirmed that the 1Malaysia Growing Up Milk Powder for children 1 year old and above contained excessive amount of Vitamin A, more than double the limit set by Institute of Medicine (IOM) for children 3 years old and below. Excessive doses of vitamin A may cause Hypervitaminosis A, resulting in damaged liver, asthma, skin discoloration, hair loss and other effects.

In addition, at least 2 products – oyster sauce and sweetened creamer - were confirmed to have breached health and safety regulations per the Food Regulations Act 1985. What is more, no less than 5 products were labelled wrongly, including inferior products being sold as superior goods.

Selected comparison of prices of 1Malaysia products against their counterparts in other hypermarkets has also shown that there's little difference in prices, and certainly a far cry from the 30% to 50% cheaper claim by KR1M. This is despite a RM40 million subsidy given by the Government to Mydin to open these shops.

Yet, despite all of the above, Dato' Seri Najib Razak has chosen not only to waive any punitive actions against KR1M for breaking so many laws, but instead decided cosy up to KR1M and its private owners. He did not even attempt to admonish KR1M owners for the above transgressions.

There can be no other conclusion from the above but to say that the Prime Minister isn't interested in whether it is the rakyat or the businessman who is profiting from the RM40 million subsidy; that he doesn't care if KR1M sold products which were unhealthy or of inferior quality; and that Dato' Seri Najib Razak is only interested in KR1M making lots of sales and profits for its private shareholders.

Comment on Is MAS serious about joining Oneworld? by Economist Kampong

Posted: 17 Jan 2012 08:47 AM PST

YB CK Wee

I would like to suggest that the £18.0 million be equated in RM terms. It is more than RM100.0 million. That hurts. Does it not?

YB, please ask MAS how many KL-London seats MAS must fly to generate RM100.0 million in net profits (before and after tax basis). How many 50, 500, 5,000, 50,000, 500,000, 5,000,000 ??? How many seats???

The thing is — MAS is making losses. We were told hat the 2010 or 2011 losses amounted close to RM1.0 billion. Thus MAS will never be able to recoup the RM100.0 million they spent on QPR home-only shirts?? So is the money is lost forever ??? Is this the sign of things to come from the so-called Comprehensive Collaborative Agreement (CCF)?? Don’t know how the F appeared in the acronym. Was it supposed to mean Comprehensively and Completely F***ed??

Perhaps MAS could tell us the increase (dramatic we hope) in the number of tourists and regular travelers traveling from London to KL.

There must be many English football fans that is just dying to come to Malaysia. They would want to see this for themselves. They must be very curious to see — the MAS crafted new image of Malaysian and Malaysians – the land of the CCF***ed!!

Please stop all such nightly Bazar in Malaysia because it breeds social problems and bad for the nation.

Why does MAS have to appoint Martin Barrow as the advisor or consultant? The current Board members not good enough? If he is good enough, then he could have done something when he was a board member in MAS. Yes heard that he travelled a lot on the pretext of turun padang. Also heard he liked to kacau the staff, sometimes even for his friends tickets or seats. Maybe you would say, when he was in MAS, he was outnumbered by the Malaysian directors so could not implement his brilliant ideas. So, what is the difference now? He will still be outnumbered. It is not a secret that Mr Martin and MAS current chairman are friends. He was the one who brought Mr Martin in as “bored” member years ago when he was the MD then. It’s back to square one for MAS.

“National duties”, eh?

Pray tell – what, exactly, are these so-called “national duties”?

And if the government did require MAS to perform these “national duties”, what of good corporate governance? Were the minority shareholders of MAS misled into believing that they were investing in a sound, well-run and profitable company?

If the government wanted MAS to perform “national duties”, then why bother taking MAS public and listing it on the stock exchange? The government could have run MAS as a unit within the Civil Aviation Department, with no worries about profitability, minority shareholders or corporate governance!

And if MAS was forced to fly “unprofitable routes”, then didn’t it’s Board and senior management have the balls to take on the government, or to resign en-masse if they had the courage of their convictions?

Nope, they chose to wear the “golden handcuffs” and slavishly follow government dictates, no matter how stupid or ill-thought-out!

I asked a question previously in another of Mr Wee’s blog postings about just how many of the domestic airports in Malaysia are really profitable; this was prompted by reports that Senai Airport in Johor is being divested by it’s owners (who now appear to be taking over the Khazanah stake in Proton). This question was never answered, because I suspect that many state governments are not willing to admit that their domestic airports are loss-making “white elephants”.

Coming to the issue of AirAsia and the non-payment of airport taxes, why didn’t Malaysia Airports (another public-listed company with minority shareholders) take legal action to recover the said outstanding monies? Are you implying that the management of MAHB was not on the ball here or that they were “pressured” to conveniently “overlook” the millions in outstanding monies? If that were the case, then why the very public slanging match between MAHB and AirAsia over any number of issues?

I note also that you have chosen to evade the point of how MAS has to compete against other airlines in the region, and how it has been dealt a lousy hand by both the government and MAHB. I had raised these points previously in other blog postings by Mr Wee, but no one has answered them up to now.

So, are we to believe that MAS was an innocent lamb led to slaughter, or that it was fully cognisant of it’s shortcomings and weaknesses vis-a-it’s competitors?

And were the leaders of the MAS unions wilfully (or blissfully) unaware of how the global aviation industry was developing, what other airlines were (and are) doing and what MAS’s weaknesses were?

That, to my mind, has to be damn shortsighted!

DSAI Begins Legal Action Against Utusan Malaysia

Posted: 17 Jan 2012 05:29 AM PST

I refer to certain reports published in the Utusan Malaysia newspaper on January 17th 2012 alleging that the Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had made statements in a BBC interview calling for the legalizing of homosexuality.

These reports are defamatory, scurrilous, politically motivated and gutter journalism of the lowest kind.

In the BBC interview, the Opposition Leader whilst calling for review of archaic laws, went on to state that "we, Muslim and non-muslim generally believe and are committed to support the sanctity of marriage between man and woman in Malaysia. We do not promote homosexuality in the public sphere and domain". Thus the Utusan Malaysia report is completely and blatantly false.

The UMNO-linked Utusan Malaysia newspaper has consistently published false, mischievous and scurrilous reports against the political opposition. Indeed, politically motivated and dishonest media reporting has become the norm among many mainstream media organizations such as Utusan Malaysia. This dismal state of affairs has been created, fostered and encouraged by the Barisan Nasional government.

In view of this, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has in the public interest begun legal action against Utusan Malaysia. Through his solicitors, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has on 17.1.2012 issued a demand notice against Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Bhd which is the proprietor of Utusan Malaysia newspaper and against the Editor of Utusan Malaysia, demanding retraction of the above allegations, an apology and damages. He brings this action as a matter of principle and in vindication of the people's right to fair media reporting.

Former Minister: BN ‘Bombed’ Voters With Cash

Posted: 17 Jan 2012 04:37 AM PST

Malaysia Chronicle

Former Cabinet Minister Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir says that cash was given to voters in previous elections and added the strategy was known as "bomb".

Kadir, who is from Umno also added that he had himself seen how cash handouts that ranged from RM200 to RM1,000 was used in Barisan Nasional's election campaigns to bribe voters in return for their support at the polls.

The former Minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism, said that the word used for the strategy was known as "bomb".

Speaking at a forum, he said “I have been the head of delegation of many campaigns and I have been given lump sums of money to distribute,” said the former Information Minister at the Malaysia Strategic Outlook Conference 2012 here. “It was a blatant use of money to buy votes.”

But he was quick to add that he personally didn't use the money.

James Chin, who heads the School of Social Sciences at Monash University at Sunway, and who spoke at the forum after Abdul Kadir said that "bombing" was a very effective tool in Sabah and Sarawak.

Kadir said that while he still in Umno, he wanted to remind them of the "Merdeka trust" — which meant giving the people the right to truly free and fair elections.

Umno should not fear losing

Kadir also told Umno members not to fear losing if it was sincere in its intentions.

"If you lose accept it; people change governments all the time in US and Australia," he said. "I am an Umno man, I don't mind if I lose. If you are there just to make millions for yourself and your cronies or if I have made my billions and am afraid I will be arrested after I lose power, then I will do all these tricks."

Kadir stressed that to have free and fair elections, there must be equal access to the media and GLCs and government departments must be neutral.

"You must give the opposition the freedom to have TV, radio and newspapers," he said. "For 50 years, PAS has been asking for a newspaper licence but none given — the government is a big bully."

Barisan Nasional, he said, should not be making use of the Ministry of Information, Felda, Felcra, the Special Branch and other federal agencies to support their campaign.

Jangan Terpengaruh Dakyah dan Fitnah Jahat Media UMNO

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 08:48 PM PST

–Kenyataan Media Untuk Edaran Segera—

17hb Januari 2012

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-16531714

“We will have to review archaic laws

and we, muslims and non muslims generally believe and committed to support the sanctity of marriage between man and woman in Malaysia.

but we should not be seen as punitive and consider the archaic laws as relevant. We need to review them. We do not promote homosexuality in public sphere and domain. We will not make apologies towards that. I think to use this sort of legislation to be punitive, punish innocent people cannot be condoned and be tolerated.”

NFC: Tekanan Kepada Muhyidin Semakin Kuat

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 06:28 PM PST

Harakah Daily

mesti disiasat ekoran skandal National Feedlot Corporation.
