Parliament is an important stage for members Posted: 10 Jun 2012 03:34 AM PDT DAP National Deputy Chairman and MP for Kepong Dr Tan Seng Giaw believes that both Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional can use the House to debate meaningfully national issues such as corruption, wastage and illegal immigration. Ideally, both sides must follow the Standing Order and the Speaker is non-aligned. Parliamentarians know that they are legislators, concerned with the well-being of the nation, including tyhe national budget and the ways public funds are spent. Every cent allocated and spent must be approved by the House. The Prime Minister and his ministers must also lead by example. For example, during question hour, a minister answers question briefly and relevantly. The member who asks must also be brief and to the point. Thus, the question and answer hour can be meaningful. If a minister makes a long statement and the questioner also makes a statement, the House goes haywire.During the debate, both sides are responsible for keeping the House in order. The situation can improve with time. |
