| PTPTN loans: Policy unfair to top graduates Posted: 22 Sep 2011 12:01 AM PDT PTPTN loans: Policy unfair to top graduates 2011/09/22 I REPRESENT a batch of students who graduated with first-class honours degree in August 2009, with loans from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). It was a milestone in our lives that should call for jubilation and celebration. However, we were saddened by the announcement that students who graduated from last year onwards will have their PTPTN loans waived in recognition of their excellent achievement. Prior to 2006, it was also PTPTN's policy to waive the loans of first-class honours graduates by converting them into scholarships. But this policy was discontinued in 2006. As a result, first-class honours graduates between 2006 and 2009 have been left in the lurch. How can we hope to retain top local talents with such injustice? We tried to seek redress for this, but our efforts only resulted in more heartache and disappointment. A politician we approached said the waiver was stopped from 2006 because universities were churning out mediocre first-class graduates "like nobody's business". What an affront to us and the universities. Another politician said the government was short of funds. That is also difficult to accept. T.C.U.
