A new shelther for a single mother with 4 children

A single mum in dire need

IT'S hard to raise children nowadays and it's even harder if you are a single parent.

Gan Mi Mi, 36, lost her husband Au Kong Soon, 50, in August last year and she is now a mother and also a 'father' to four young kids, aged one to 11.

Besides having to feed her kids, Gan also has to pay RM350 in house rental for her low-cost flat in Bandar Baru Air Itam, Penang.

Her plight caught the attention of State Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai who managed to find a new home for the family.

She is now staying in the Rifle Range flat in Penang where she has to pay only RM110 in rental per month.

"I hope to continue staying here till I'm old. It's convenient here," she said with tears flowing down her cheeks.

Gan is unable to work as her kids are still very small. Two of them are studying in SJK(C) Sin Kang in Air Itam.

She lives on donations from family and friends, her husband's SOCSO money and the RM400 aid from the Welfare Department.

Wong visited her recently in conjunction with International Women's Day and also gave books and stationery to the children.

"With a new shelter, I hope it would help to ease her burden," he said.

單親媽媽滿意入住打鎗埔組屋‧"很方便下樓就買到食物"

（檳城）"我很高興住這裡，希望可以繼續住下去……我沒有交通工具，住這裡很方便，下樓就可以買食物了。"

住在打鎗埔的顏美美（36歲）哭著向前往探訪她一家的檳州房屋委員會主席黃漢偉，訴說她的心願。

定期交租就不會被迫遷

為此，黃漢偉為顏美美派定心丸，他說，只要定期交租金，大致上房屋局是不會要她搬走。

去年，顏美美的丈夫周康順因患上鼻咽癌，也曾透過女兒周慧敏就讀的新江小學發動籌款活動，此事也引起該區州議員即黃漢偉的關注，後者也撥款協助周家。

後來，周康順在同年8月病逝，而顏美美一家也在黃漢偉的幫助下，於去年12月搬入打鎗埔的一個2房單位。

黃漢偉配合國際婦女節的到來，於昨日（9日）和太太林素萍前往探訪該家庭，並給予他們鼓勵。

黃漢偉：複雜環境激勵孩子更懂事

黃漢偉說，打鎗埔的環境較複雜，但孩子也因此會更懂事。

"我也是在打鎗埔長大的孩子，以前一起走路上學的同齡孩子後來也成為醫生和工程師。"

他說，顏美美一家之前在發林新市鎮租房子，每個月租金達350令吉，這筆數目對只依賴福利金和親友援助的家庭來說是一個很沉重的負擔，因此該委員會也給予顏美美特別津貼，讓一家大小以每個月110令吉租下打鎗埔一個2房單位。

他表示，根據市價，這些2房單位的租金大約300令吉。
