Does MCA support for more women representation in the parliament? Posted: 03 Oct 2011 03:14 AM PDT English translation of my column article which originally published in China Press on Oct 4. MCA Youth annual general meeting is traditionally a male dominated event. However, that tradition has been reversed with the participation of a number of good looking young female members which quickly caught the attention and focus of the media. For political parties and NGO, emergence of youth wing and participation of both sexes is an irreversible development. The existence of women wing is to provide a platform for females to develop and express themselves in a male dominated society. Once gender equality is achieved, abolition of women’s wing is just a matter of time. Another way of looking at it is the reasons for establishing separate women branches is obsolete as women is sufficiently capable of competing with men on the same platform. The emergence of these female MCA youth members raised some questions as some quarter wondered if these attractive looking lass really understand politics hence their participation or they are just merely there to window dress the occasion. I prefer to view this development on the optimistic side. After all, the equation of “ample bosom empty brain” or “pretty lady = window dressing vase” is an alpha male prejudice against the fairer sex. You can’t accuse people of lacking in substance just because she is born pretty or good at grooming. After all, vanity is nature instinct and grooming to look pretty is a right. (More......) |
