Perbelanjaan Lawatan Najib sebagai Perdana Menteri

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 09:52 AM PDT

Najib's huge travel expenses

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 09:40 AM PDT

English translation of my column article which originally published in China Press on Sept 6.

Travelling to a foreign country, whether for work or pleasure, is a welcome task for most.  After all, sampling different lifestyle, culture and food can be enjoyable. As the prime minister, Najib certainly won’t be short of opportunities to travel and the amount of his travelling expense is beyond the imagination of most.

travel expenses of the prime minister and his deputy, including their spouses from 2008 till June 2011 amounted to RM17,118,650.58 and RM8,020,328.07 respectively, making a grand total of RM25,138,978.65

The annual breakdown of “official expenses” of the prime minister and his spouse for the years from 2008 till June 2011 amounted to RM1,739,332.85, RM4,811,837.48, RM5,130,370.99 and RM5,427,172.26.

travel expenses incurred by the Najibs for the first half of 2011 have exceeded the entire year travel expenses for the past 3 years and heavens know how much the total damage would run up to by the end of the year. This is a piercing self contradiction from an administration that advocates austerity amongst its population.

Not only Najib incurred huge travel expenses, his also spent a great deal of time overseas. From his appointment as prime minister from 3rd April 2009 till 19th October 2010, he had 588 days as the prime minister but spent 274 days overseas, which means for almost half the time, he is not around to administer the country.
