Chinese Independent School in Kuantan

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 09:27 PM PDT

The application to set up a new Chinese Independent School in Kuantan, a much sought after amenity by the Chinese community in Pahang, was finally approved. This is wonderful news for the people of Pahang who have waited for so long to have a Chinese Independent School of their own.

As the 13th General Election draws closer, granting an approval for a new Chinese Independent School is a great opportunity for BN and MCA in particular to claim credit and heap self-praise to pull in votes. Oddly, MCA till now dare not disclose the approval letter hence the full terms and condition to the public.

Why am I so persistent in pursuing this issue? The reason is simple. According to some information passed on to me, the approval letter stipulated that the curriculum of this new Chinese Independent School will be based on SPM though the school is allowed to add on additional subjects.

If the approval letter really set such terms and condition then all I can say that BN has never been sincere in approving a new Chinese Independent School. I do not object SPM syllabus being incorporated into Chinese Independent School but Chinese Independent School's syllabus should be based on the curriculum suggested by Dong Jiao Zong. To paraphrase the situation, while a western restaurant is not prohibited to sell Chinese food but if its main courses are mainly Chinese dishes then how could it call itself a western restaurant?

In addition, when private international schools are set up here, would the government also stipulate that their syllabus must be based on UPSR and SPM syllabus? If no such requirement exists, why Chinese Independent Schools are being singled out?
