Perutusan Pesta Ka’amatan dari Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim Posted: 30 May 2012 12:47 AM PDT 'Kopivosian Tadau Ka'amatan'
Kotobian Tadau Tagazo Do Kaamatan. Pesta Ka'amatan Address by Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Leader of the Opposition 'Kopivosian Tadau Ka'amatan'
For this Pesta Ka'amatan (May 30-31) I would like to extend my greetings of a good "harvest" to all my brothers and sisters in Sabah, especially the Kadazan, Dusun and Murut communities. Though, substantial numbers of Kadazan, Dusun and Murut peoples remain in agriculture, many have ventured to industries like shipping, oil and gas and the civil service, the value and symbol of Pesta Ka'amatan remains the same. Bringing its peoples together to show appreciation of a bountiful "harvest" in life and the continuation of culture. Pesta Ka'amatan should be recognised and celebrated not only as a Sabah event — but a Malaysian one. Sabah's multiculturalism is central to the larger mission to not only protect diversity but to celebrate it. Being Malaysia's second largest state it is a crucial member of the Federation of Malaysia. Strong and full of potential, resource-rich Sabah's considerable wealth is denied to a majority of its people. That must change, that will change. Change is what Pakatan Rakyat champions for Sabah. We have spoken and fought for these policies: Resolve long-standing native land disputes; giving Sabah 20% of all oil and gas revenues; reinstituting territorial rights on Block L and M which has oil and gas deposits; a Royal Commission of Inquiry into illegal immigrants and the Borneonisation of the state civil service. We intend see them through when we assume federal power. Pakatan Rakyat does not view Sabah as the fixed deposit for anyone; Sabah is more important than just votes. It is made of people who matter, people who must be allowed to meet their destiny as a people. Change is what Pakatan Rakyat champions for Sabah, to liberate Sabah. Sabah for us is an equal partner in the Federation of Malaysia. In our vision of the future, Sabah will shape their state while aiding the wider federation to become more unified and strong. This is the true spirit of federalism Malaysia espoused when it was formed in 1963. State interest and future must be protected and guaranteed, as stipulated in our Constitution. Sabah must cease to play second fiddle in Malaysian politics, especially in matters affecting them. This is where we are heading, this is what we are promising.. I would like to conclude by wishing that all the Pesta Ka'amatan reunions all across Sabah are held in the great spirit of rejoicing a proud and vibrant culture. That those travelling back after the holidays will have safe journeys home, and everyone join us in Pakatan Rakyat in realising a Malaysia for all its peoples equally. Posted: 30 May 2012 12:08 AM PDT LI President Hans van Baalen MEP has condemned the recent charges brought against Anwar Ibrahim, Leader of the Opposition in Malaysia and of the People Justice Party (LI observer member party), for "violating a public assembly law" and for "disobeying a court order" during an electoral reform rally which ended in chaos after police fired teargas and water cannon into crowds on 28 April 2012. "The international community had it eyes on focused South East Asia in the past few months following the positive democratic opening of Burma and the election of Aung San Suu Kyi in the Burmese parliament. Instead of having even more encouraging messages from the region, Malaysia has sent a message of regress. It became a habit of the current Malaysian government to make one step forward and two steps back in introducing greater freedoms and real democracy in the country. The latest harassment of the leader of the opposition Anwar Ibrahim is unacceptable and raises serious concerns ahead of the next general elections", said LI President Hans van Baalen MEP. He continued: "I know Anwar Ibrahim very well. We have met in several occasions in Kuala Lumpur and at Liberal International events. He is a decent man, who believes in freedom for all, democracy and justice. The latest charges against him are politically motivated, and he is not a problem. The problem is the legislation that the government of Malaysia has to amend, allowing its citizens freedom of assemble and voice out their opinion. The problem is the lack of understanding by the Malaysian government that the opposition should be included in building the Malaysian democracy and not harassed or demonised." LI President Hans van Baalen concluded: "I express my full support to Anwar Ibrahim in this new legal struggle imposed on him by the Malaysian authorities. And on behalf of Liberal International I voice again our clear support to our members in Malaysia Gerakan and PKR, which consistently fight for introduction of more civil rights and liberties in their country." Note for the Editors: The charges filed Tuesday against Anwar Ibrahim come just four months after he was acquitted of sodomy charges that he claims were an attempt to damage him politically. He said the new accusations, ahead of national elections that many speculate will be held by September, have the same motive. The Hague/London, 29 May 2012 |
Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim at risk of imprisonment Posted: 30 May 2012 12:01 AM PDT Press release, 22 May 2012 Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim at risk of imprisonment After charges were brought against the Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for alleged violations of the Peaceful Assembly Act, Dr Thomas Gambke, who supports Anwar Ibrahim as part of a special partnership under the "Parliamentarians Protect Parliamentarians" programme, has issued the following statement: Worrying news is emerging from Malaysia. The opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and another member of the opposition have been charged with violating the Peaceful Assembly Act, a new law which severely curtails the right to demonstrate. Fears that this law would make it impossible for Anwar to be effective in his work as leader of the opposition are evidently justified. The Malaysian opposition is, in practice, denied access to the media, particularly television. Public ap-pearances are the only way to inform the country's citizens about the opposition's political aims. In January, a court was forced to acquit Anwar Ibrahim of the charge of homosexuality, which is a criminal offence in Malaysia, after it became clear that he had been framed and the allegations could not be sustained. In the last elections in 2008, the opposition won in five of Malaysia's thirteen states and provided the Chief Minister (head of government) in these states. It is believed that the opposition could win a sizeable majority in the forthcoming elections.

Re-Tabling Of National Budget And Necessity For An Economic Debate Posted: 29 May 2012 11:42 PM PDT The slower Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 4.7% for the first quarter of 2012, as announced recently by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), has a serious repercussion on Malaysia's public finances. It is the second time that Dato' Seri Najib Tun Razak's administration failed to achieve important economic targets which were the basis for the National Budget of 2012. While the GDP growth of 5.1% for 2011 was at the lower end of the projected range of 5.0%-5.5% used as assumptions by Barisan Nasional in the budget, Dato' Seri Najub obviously missed the 16.2% growth target for private investment in 2011, which turned out to be only 14.4%. |
