MCA's recruitment drive for phantom voters?

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 04:40 AM PDT

At about 3:30pm yesterday, we received a phone call from a resident in SS19 flats informing us that MCA was doing a road show there and that a counter had been set up for foreigners to apply for permanent residency and citizenship in Malaysia. I asked for documentation proof and the leaflet above was emailed to us. The last portion states the following:

"Applying for PR? Not Citizen of Malaysia? Come And Meet with Dato' Lee Chee Leong At SS19/1 on 15/04!!!"

This is indeed appalling based on the following reasons:

(a) It has confirmed our suspicion all along that Barisan Nasional ("BN") was turning to foreigners for votes after losing support amongst Malaysians. BN had on 14 April 2012 launched their machinery gearing up for elections and the road show activities were targeted at fishing votes. Bersih 3.0 steering committee member and political scientist Wong Chin Huat has recently revealed how voters can be cloned and an example was given for the constituency of Subang Jaya. MCA must now explain why their road show in preparation for elections involved foreigners meeting the Deputy Home Minister for permanent residency and citizenship.

(b) Time and time again we see BN misusing the government machinery for campaign and political gains. This is another clear example of the Home Ministry campaigning hand in hand with MCA for an exercise as important as granting permanent residency and citizenship to foreigners.

(c) What is the Standard Operating Procedures for application of permanent residency and citizenship in Malaysia? Are the requirements for such an application compromised by simply meeting the Deputy Home Minister?

(d) There are many local Malaysian Indians who are still waiting for their citizenship so much so that the Prime Minister had set up a special task force to help the Indians resolve citizenship woes. However, instead of resolving this as a priority, BN Kelana Jaya embarks on an exercise to assist foreigners with citizenship.

(e) There are more pressing issues for the Deputy Home Minister to address in relation to security and safety but instead, he gave priority to meeting foreigners wanting permanent residency and citizenship in Subang Jaya.

At the press conference today with YB Saari Sungib (Hulu Kelang), YB Manoharan (Kota Alam Shah), DAP and PAS members of DUN Subang Jaya

MCA must explain this despicable act. In the face of such threat of phantom voters, the people of Subang Jaya must fiercely safeguard their rights to have a clean and fair election by volunteering to be a polling or counting agent this coming elections. Bersih 3.0 is no longer an option.
