Dissecting Teoh Beng Hock RIC report

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 08:31 AM PDT

English translation of my column article which originally published in China Press on August 24.

2 years ago, Selangor MACC informed us that they have released Teoh Beng Hock around 3:45 a.m., 16th July. 2 years later, the RCI report disclosed that after the 3rd round of interrogation, although Beng Hock’s statement has been recorded, he was not released for the following reasons (para. 167 of the RCI report).

1.Beng Hock was forcibly taken to the MACC office for interrogation. Under such circumstances, it is very difficult to believe that he would happily stay back in the MACC office for even 1 more minute upon release. The truth was, Beng Hock did ask a MACC officer named Sachi when he could go home. We can see that Beng Hock was very eager to go home.

2.Throughout the interrogation process, MACC always cross check separate statements from different witnesses. In other words, before Tan Boon Wah and Lee Wye Wing completed recording their statements, MACC would never let Beng Hock leave. Lee Wye Wing only finished having his statement recorded at 5 a.m. while Tan Boon Wah’s interrogation session lasted until 11:00a.m. hence there was no way Beng Hock was released at 3:45a.m.

3.It was also noted that upon having their statement recorded, Tan Boon Wah and Lee Wye Wing were not immediately released hence MACC’s assertion that “witness can leave immediately after having their statement taken” do not hold ground.

4.Before a witness is released, MACC would normally issue an official notice to request the witness to return with specific documents to assist with investigation but MACC did not issue such notice to Beng Hock hence MACC’s assertion that Beng Hock was released has been proven as false.

5.In June 2009, there was instances where visitors walked into MACC offices without permission and the then Deputy Director of Selangor MACC Hishammuddin issued an order that all witnesses and visitors must be accompanies by MACC officers during the duration they are in MACC office. Therefore, after his interrogation, Beng Hock must have been accompanied by a MACC officer. In other words, since Beng Hock was not released then there must have been a 4th interrogation. RCI deduced that the 4th interrogation occurred between 3:30a.m. till 6:00a.m. The officer responsible for interrogation was the main director of Ops DUN, the Deputy Director of Selangor MACC Hishammuddin.

At this point, I wish to remind everyone that 2 weeks ago, I pointed out the following points in my column: Why did MACC lie 2 years ago that Beng Hock was released at 3:45a.on June 16th? If Beng Hock committed suicide, why did MACC have to conceal the fact that they carried out a 4th interrogation on Beng Hock between 3:30a.m. till 6:00a.m.? What really happened between 3:30a.m. till 6:00a.m.?

Next week, I shall elaborate further on the role of Hishammuddin in this investigation.
