Selain Rosmah, peguam bela Anwar menemubual bekas Ketua Polis Melaka, Datuk Rodhwan Yusof petang tadi, kata Karpal.

Pakatan Invites PR-Turned- Voters To Come Forward

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 12:27 AM PDT

Malaysiakini

Pakatan Rakyat today called for all former permanent residents allegedly given citizenships in return for votes to come forward to avoid being held to ransom by "treacherous agents".

Speaking in Petaling Jaya, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar (right) said that by coming forward the new citizens will help expose those involved, and will no longer face threats of having their citizenships revoked.

"We will continue with our campaign to clean up and expose abuse of immigration powers.

"I appeal to these ‘BN citizens’ to give us information on how they were naturalised so that those involved can no longer revoke their citizenships at will and make political threats," she said.

Pakatan previously claimed to have found evidence of permanent residents and foreigners being offered citizenships in return for votes for BN.

The ruling coalition has vehemently denied such a practice exists.

Arah Berjimat, Tapi Bil Elektrik Najib RM10 Juta Setahun

"Perdana Menteri sendiri tak jimat, berapa bil elektrik dia? Dia (Najib) suruh rakyat ubah cara hidup, suruh hidup berhemah tapi dia sendiri cakap tak serupa bikin," kata Tian Chua ketika dihubungi Keadilandaily.

"Najib hanya boleh suruh kurangkan makan gula, kurangkan pakai elektrik, tapi isteri dia pakai cincin RM24 juta, sampai sekarang dia tak jawab," kata Zuraida.

Putrajaya Ditches FBC Media as Image Experts After Exposé

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 07:39 PM PDT

The Malaysian Insider

Putrajaya has now ended its contract with British publicity firm FBC Media after an embarrassing exposé last week revealed Malaysian leaders routinely appeared in paid-for interviews on global television programmes.

The Malaysian Insider understands that the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) terminated FBC Media's contract in the past week, just months after another public relations firm, APCO Worldwide from the United States, met an ignominious end for alleged links to Israel.

"The contract with FBC Media is over. PMO has enough people to handle publicity locally and abroad," a source toldThe Malaysian Insider.
FBC Media's dealings with the Malaysian government came to light after supplementary supply Bills showed vast payments made for a "Global Strategic Communications Campaign".

The records showed that between 2008 and 2009, RM57.7 million was paid by the Prime Minister's Office to FBC Media for the campaign.

Despite FBC Media's contract, veteran newspaper editor Datuk A. Kadir Jasin's also revealed that Putrajaya has some 11 press aides working for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak against the three who served Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in his 22 years in power.

FBC Media has also been linked to Najib's predecessor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who apparently paid US$5 million (RM15 million) for public relations services that included television programmes and professional bloggers to burnish his image before the April 16 state polls.

Global broadcasters have been scrambling to contain potential damage after the allegations of impropriety surfaced following the expose by whistleblower Sarawak Report, which linked the interviews and other programmes produced by FBC Media as having been paid millions of ringgit by the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition to shine its international image.

US-based broadcaster CNN denied last week it was paid to interview Najib during his visit to London last month but questions remain about the role played by its anchor John Defterios after the latter's FBC Media programme "World Business" was axed early this month by rival network CNBC.

The spotlight is on the relationship between FBC Media — the British publicity firm led by media giant Alan Friedman with Defterios still listed as its group president — and broadcasters like CNBC, CNN and the BBC.

As a result of the allegations, the BBC has also said it will suspend programmes produced by FBC Media and investigate the company.

Influential Washington-based news website Politico.com said FBC Media is listed in lobbying reports as having paid tens of thousands of dollars to Washington-based lobbying firm APCO in recent years to lobby on behalf of the Malaysian government.

CNN's denial comes on the heels of rival CNBC's decision to drop its flagship show "World Business", which has similarly been alleged to have been paid to feature Najib in its prime-time news slots last month after his administration cracked down on a civil rally pushing for cleaner and more honest elections.

Both interviews were conducted by Defterios which has raised eyebrows over his appearance on the rival channels as well as questions over a conflict of interest to his unclear ties with FBC Media.

Defterios was listed as director in the British firm on the FBC Media website before it was stripped down to a one-page fact sheet yesterday, with all information about its board members removed. The information remains available on the whistleblower Sarawak Report website.

CNN told Politico that Defterios has been a full-time employee since March and had cut all ties with FBC Media at that time, but he remains listed as CNBC's managing editor for the just-axed "World Business" programme.

In profiles of Defterios available online, he is listed as the group president of FBC Media.

Apart from CNN, FBC Media has also produced editorial content for the UK broadcaster BBC.

The British broadcaster told Politico all independent TV companies are required to sign strict agreements with it to prevent conflicts of interests and that it was not aware of some of the information provided by FBC but will be investigating the claims "as a matter of urgency."

The Sarawak Report, in a story published in early August, claimed insider sources revealed Najib "suggested" to Taib that he hire FBC Media to bolster his seemingly flagging popularity after the Sarawak chief minister appeared to suffer a publicity crisis due to allegations of extensive corruption.

Both have not denied the report since it was published by the whistleblower website.

Hot on ‘Secret’ MAS-AirAsia Deal Comes Reprieve For Ex-Daim Boy, Tajudin Ramli

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 11:47 AM PDT

Malaysia Chronicle

Amid growing concern that Malaysian taxpayers have again been taken for a ride by the UMNO elite, Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim ticked off Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz for allegedly instructing Government-Linked-Companies or GLCs to withdraw lawsuits filed against for MAS chairman Tajudin Ramli.

Among the affected GLCs wereTelekom Malaysia Bhd, Naluri Corporation, Celcom (M) Bhd, Atlan Holdings Bhd, Pengurusan Danaharta Bhd, Malaysia Airlines and Duta Skyline Bhd. These firms had sued Tajudin for losses suffered by MAS amounting to billions of ringgit, and there is concern that with a stroke of pen, Prime Minister Najib Razak’s administration was bailing out fallen tycoon Tajudin.

“Such orders should have come from the Minister of Finance and not Nazri as this concerns GLCs. The government said it had a strong case against Tajudin involving billions of ringgit in filing the suit. It is a disturbing,” Anwar, a former Finance minister, told reporters on Thursday.

The UMNO elite

UMNO is the dominant party in the BN coalition, providing all 6 of the country’s prime ministers since 1957. A party of over 3 million members, it operates on a largely feudalistic style with power tightly held in the hands of a few elite families, including Najib’s and former premier Mahathir Mohamad’s.

On the back of this latest escape route for Tajudin is the secrecy-shrouded MAS-AirAsia deal, wherein national investment firm Khazanah swapped its 20.5 per cent stake in MAS for 10 per cent in AirAsia. Analysts have been mixed in their responses, with some insisting it benefited AiAsia and some who say it was a bailout for MAS. Whichever it is, the deal lacked transparency and shares in AirAsia plummeted, while MAS stock shot up more than 18 per cent.

Given the huge complexity of the swap, it is not clear yet who really benefited but already many say they smell corruption and improper benefits in the deal praised as a “very good idea” by Mahathir, former Trade minister Rafidah Aziz and Najib himself. There is speculation that the ‘spoils’ have already been carved out and agreed on by these UMNO bigwigs.

It is also telling that Munir Majid, the former MAS chairman who initiated the suit against Tajudin, had resigned effective July 31, 2011. He was MAS chief since 2004. Meanwhile, Anwar has appealed to the authorities, including the Securities Commission, to sieve through the transaction to ensure utmost transparency.

“More importantly, the deal raises the question as to what is the fate of the GLC Transformation Programmes that had been launched by the Prime Minister Najib Razak with much fanfare and wastage of millions of the rakyat's money. And is the government specifically admitting that the so-called successful turnaround of MAS was a mere charade? The Prime Minister must be held accountable for misleading the rakyat on this,” said Anwar in a response to the swap.

“This deal also raises fundamental issues of transparency because of the secrecy in which it was shrouded. In this regard, the Securities Commission must investigate the possibility of irregularities including insider trading of the shares of both entities.”

The Daim Boys

A news portal had reported earlier on Thursday that Nazri had issued letters to the GLCs, informing them that the Finance ministry had agreed to settle out-of-court all outstanding civil suits against Tajuddin.

“This is to inform you that the government of Malaysia and the Finance Ministry has agreed to settle all civil claims against Tan Sri Dato Tajuddin Ramli (left) and others to be withdrawn immediately in view of the fact that the government and the Finance Ministry have agreed that the said cases will be settled out of court. For your information the government has given me the mandate to act for the government in this matter,” Malaysian Insider had quoted Nazri as saying.

It is believed that both the BN government and the GLCs will negotiate for a global settlement with all the parties involved in the Tajudin lawsuits. Some of the matters which had come up before Federal Court judge Md Raus Shariff on Thursday have been deferred to September 29  for case management pending settlement.

Tajudin is one of the coterie of Malay tycoons given special privileges by Mahathir who said he wanted to create a special speed of Malay entreprenuers to crimp the Chinese dominance in corporate Malaysia. But soon after it was implemented, the plan succumbed to massive corruption, with many pointing the fingers at Mahathir and his finance minister of that time Daim Zainuddin as benefiting the most from the program.

When asked about the MAS-AirAsia deal, Mahathir not only insisted it was a “very good idea”, but that ”AirAsia can learn about the experience of MAS and MAS can learn how to reduce costs as done by AirAsia.”
