MACC must be truly independent

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 01:03 AM PDT

DAP National Deputy Chairman and MP for Kepong Dr Tan Seng Giaw reiterates that Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission must be truly independent to improve its image.

After the two deaths at MACC's premises, Teoh Beng Hock and Sarbaini, it has had a terrible beating.

On 25.7.2011, Dr Tan comments on the Executive Transformation Committee headed by the Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim to review existing standard operating procedure of the commission.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the death of Teoh Beng Hock on 16.7.2009 points out the aggressive, oppressive, unscrupulous and continuous interrogation of three MACC officers contribuing to the death of Beng Hock.

Hitherto, the three officers have been suspended. Now, Executive Transformation Committee is to review operating procedure. This is scarcely enough to improve the image of MACC.

The two deaths have caused so much furore that it will take a long time for the commission to recover. It must show that it has integrity in all aspects.

An important factor to improve the image and the effectiveness of MACC is to make sure that it is genuinely independent. If the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib means what he says about the anti-corruption role of MACC, he must consider this aspect very seriously and take meaningful step to realize it.
