MP CHIDES SUPP KUCHING FOR PETITION ON EXEMPTION OF GST

Posted: 12 Oct 2015 09:49 PM PDT

KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen has ridiculed SUPP Kuching's campaign to gather 500,000 signatures to request exemption of Goods and Services Tax (GST) for Sarawak.

The Kota Sentosa assemblyman and state DAP chairman said the SUPP branch ought to make a clear stand whether action should be taken against it very MP who had voted in favour of GST, before going around asking people for their signatures.

"I was shocked when I read the papers today (yesterday) that SUPP Kuching is launching a signature campaign to request for exemption of GST for Sarawak. I think before they even ask people to sign, they should check the parliamentary record as I am certain their MP Richard Riot, who is also a minister in the federal cabinet, agreed and voted for GST.

"The GST Bill was passed in 2013 after the general election. All the opposition MPs were against it, but BN (Barisan Nasional) MPs including Sarawakian MPs all voted for it. Had the MPs from Sarawak voted against GST Bill, it would not be passed because they would not have gotten more than 51 per cent of the lower house.

"Now that SUPP wants to launch a full campaign on this, the first thing they should do is to take action against Richard Riot as well as Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian for voting for GST. We do not want a scenario whereby your MP and Senator supported the Bill in Parliament when you try to be hero outside," he told reporters outside Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

Chong described the move to gather signatures as 'ridiculous' and said SUPP Kuching was trying to fool the people on the matter.

"It is a very laughable move on their part. Outside, you say you're against it, but your MP in Parliament voted for it, supported it. This is what we call political cheat."

He also wondered whether the branch had received blessings from its partners in Sarawak BN.
"Ask them to make a stand first before getting signatures," he said, adding there was no point in collecting signatures if after that, Sarawak BN ordered the branch or the party not to go against the policy.

Chong pointed out that SUPP Kuching was bound by its party and BN discipline and it should therefore, put its house in order before anything else.

"There is no question about the people against GST, and the people of Kuching have spoken through DAP — we oppose. That is already very clear. What are you (SUPP Kuching) trying to do? Sandiwara! (Theatrical drama)."

At a press conference on Sunday, chairperson Datuk Lily Yong said SUPP Kuching would launch a signature campaign today to collect as many as 500,000 signatures to push for GST exemption for Sarawak.

She said 'everybody is suffering' since the implementation of GST in April this year, based on the feedback the branch had gathered, which had also prompted her to assert: "Sarawak is not ready for GST."

DAP Sibu reps submit ‘road’ proposal to CM’s Office

KUCHING: Three DAP elected representatives from Sibu submitted their proposal for a Sibu Outer Ring Road to the special admin officer of the Chief Minister's Office, Azmi Bujang, yesterday.
Pelawan David Wong (Pelawan), Dudong assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong and Sibu MP Oscar Ling, who were accompanied by state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, had wanted to submit the proposal to the chief minister but they did not get to see Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem as they did not make an appointment to see him.
They were instead met by Azmi outside the security booth at Wisma Bapa Malaysia. Azmi acknowledged receipt of the proposal.
The proposal, said David, was to build three new roads and upgrade an existing road in Sibu for about RM70 million.
"One of them is at the Jalan Wong King Huo roundabout, connecting to JPJ, which is about 4.5km. There will be a bypass in the middle. We estimate it cost about RM30 million. Another one is connecting a residential area to another by constructing a bridge across Sungai Merah. That would cost around RM10 million.
"Another one is Teku Road to Sibu Golf Club area. A lot of those in Kampung Dato and Kampung Nangka will be relocated to this golf club area, so that road would be around 7km, costing some RM20 million," he told reporters after handing over the proposal to Azmi.
David opined that one of the oldest roads in Sibu – Jalan Oya – needed upgrading, too. The stretch from SMK St. Elizabeth to the traffic junction, he said, needed to be upgraded to a dual carriageway. That would cost about RM10 million.
He alleged there had been no new roads built in Sibu in the last two years, which led to massive traffic congestions during peak hours.
"What we are proposing is something good for the people of Sarawak, especially Sibu, and should be good for our chief minister and the state government."
He said Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who is also Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development, had announced last March his proposal to build two roads in Sibu at a cost of RM106 million.
David claimed Soon Koh's proposal for the new road from Jalan Wong King Huo to JPJ would cost RM35 million while the other new road, which would connect directly from Sungai Merah to the golf club area, would cost RM71 million.
"His (Soon Koh) two roads cost RM106 million, but the ones we are proposing totalled only RM70 million."
He said their proposal also included urging the state government to source for 500 acres of state or NCR land along Teku Road for low-cost housing development.
"There is a lot of 'un-surveyed' land there. If we can have that new ring road, we will have more 'un-surveyed' land coming up. The state government can acquire and allocate them for low-cost housing projects, which would be good for Sibu people.
"I hope Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh does not just carry the name of Second Finance Minister but cannot do anything (with it). He should have some authority, or at least he should support our proposal. Whatever is good for Sibu … we should put politics aside."
To a question, David said they did not make the appointment because "what we want is to submit this proposal to his office and make sure that he receives it."
"I do not think the chief minister knows the conditions of Sibu like myself and my colleagues. So, he will need people from JKR (Public Works Department) and Land and Survey Department (LSD) and other authorities to source for the information that he needs."
He said the DAP had approached LSD Sibu for the information necessary to draft the proposal, stressing: "We do not just pluck the figures from the air. What we propose is credible and workable, for as long as it is through open tender."

Larian Impian Kampung pada 18 Oktober depan

Posted: 13 Sep 2015 05:14 AM PDT

Posted: 15 Sep 2015 11:13 PM PDT

While Sarawak BN leaders dare not say it, DAP Sarawak, on behalf of Sarawakians, tells Najib that he and his racist 916-Rally is NOT WELCOME in Sarawak

While Sarawak BN leaders dare not say it, DAP Sarawak, on behalf of Sarawakians, tells Najib that he and his racist 916-Rally is NOT WELCOME in Sarawak

(15-9-2015)

Najib and UMNO's open endorsement of the 916 Rally for "Malay Dignity" mars the significance of Malaysia Day.

Since the formation of Malaysia in 1963, UMNO has been the dominant party in the ruling coalition dictating the nation's key policies and all the past Prime Ministers and Deputy Prime Ministers were and still are Malays.

As it is now, all key ministerial portfolios are held by Malay ministers, government departments and large Government-linked companies are controlled by Malays and public universities headed by Malays.

As such, it is incomprehensible that Najib and UMNO still see the need to mobilise and support a rally to allegedly defend Malays' dignity.

Is Malays' dignity truly under threat in Malaysia or it is merely Najib's position as the Prime Minister under threat? Is the 916 rally truly a rally to defend "Malay Dignity" or just merely a rally to divert the national and international attention on Najib's RM2.6 billion scandal?

Why can't Najib and UMNO leave 916, Malaysia Day, alone and untainted?

916 should be a day for all Malaysians, regardless of race, language and religion, to come together as one nation to celebrate the formation of Malaysia, not a day for ONE single race.

This UMNO-endorsed 916 rally has turned this auspicious day into a Black Day in the history of Malaysia where the UMNO/BN government is making Malaysia a more divided nation.

Whatever that is in the mind of Najib, the endorsement of such a rally based on race is surely not welcome in Sarawak and he who supports such a racist rally is also not welcome in Sarawak.

Therefore, since Najib is visiting Sarawak today, I, on behalf of Sarawakian, am openly telling Najib that he and his racist political manoeuvres are not welcome in Sarawak.

Haze: We’re truly sorry, says Indonesian Consul General

Posted: 14 Sep 2015 11:49 PM PDT

KUCHING: Indonesia has identified hundreds of hotspots throughout the republic that are blanketing Sarawak and other parts of Malaysia with haze in the past two weeks.
Its Consul General here, Jahar Gultom, said President Joko Widodo recently visited South Sumatra to assess the situation and stressed the urgency to douse the fires.
"The fire is uncontrollable, but we do not want to surrender just like that. Currently, everybody, from the president and ministers down to the governors, are on the ground to put an end to these fires.
"As the consul general here, all I can say on behalf of the Indonesian government is that we are truly sorry for the transboundary haze," said Jahar to The Borneo Post yesterday.
He added that the latest major hotspot was in Sulawesi, after Kalimantan and Java. Besides the 'slash-and-burn' clearing methods for plantation, the haze was also due to bush fires, which have spread to forests and national parks in Central Java and South Sulawesi.
"The El Nino phenomenon is also a contributing factor to the dry weather, causing bush fires, which can spread very quickly," said Jahar, adding that more assistance from the international community was needed to tackle the issue effectively. Indonesia, he said, was currently renting an aircraft from Australia to water bomb South Sulawesi.
"I sincerely think we need more of such aircrafts to water bomb and carry out cloud seeding in affected areas." Local and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) based in Indonesia, he said, were also providing feedback on how the Indonesian government could tackle the situation. On another note, Jahar said his office had received a letter from the state DAP, highlighting the issue of the transboundary haze.
"We have received the letter and understand their concern. The letter will be forwarded to our consulate's headquarters."
The letter, he disclosed, also enquired if there were Malaysian plantation companies involved in illegal burning.
"If there is, it can only be made known sometime next month, when the police have completed their investigation."
Meanwhile, state DAP chairman, Chong Chieng Jen, in his letter stated that for the past two decades, transboundary haze had become an annual problem for Sarawak.
"While the oil palm industry in Indonesia is on the upward trend, we, in Sarawak, are made to suffer for the cost of such development," said Chong in the letter. This, he added, was despite the fact that the Indonesian government had signed the Asean Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution since 2002.
Chong also highlighted the transboundary haze this year was worse than last year's, as evident by the rescheduling of flights. A satellite image of the hotspots in Kalimantan was also enclosed with the letter to call for more action to being taken in Kalimantan to avoid the recurrence of the 1997 haze problem, when the Air Pollutant Index (API) shot above 600.
"We also urge for tough action to be taken against companies whose land and concessionaires areas found to have evidence of illegal burning. Should these companies be found to have any link with Malaysians or Malaysian companies, please feel free to publish their names so that we may also push for action to be taken against them in Malaysia," said Chong.
Meanwhile, yesterday's API readings, according to the Malaysian Department of Environment, had Kuching registering an API of between 99 and 117, Kota Samarahan (102-124), Sarikei (103-123), Sri Aman (120-138) and Sibu (86-101) between midnight to 5pm.
Other areas in the state recorded an API of moderate levels. An API reading of below 50 is considered Good, 51 – 100 (Moderate), 101 – 200 (Unhealthy), 201-300 (Very Unhealthy), more than 300 (Hazardous), and more than 500 (Emergency).
Meanwhile, in Miri, the API reading was 60 on Sunday but rose to 85 as at 4pm yesterday.
Department of Environment (DOE) Miri chief, Mohd Fitri Said, said the his office was posting 6-hourly API readings.
He urged the public not to do open burning as it would worsen the situation.
"The department is monitoring the situation closely. Complaints of open burning activities can be lodged with the department at 085-426994."
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department forecasts isolated thunderstorms and rains in various parts of the state in its 7-day weather forecast for the state, which was published on its website.
Last week, Indonesia issued an apology to Malaysia for the haze currently blanketing Malaysia and surrounding areas, including Singapore.
A report stated that Indonesia's central government had allocated US$1mil to provinces affected by the peat and forest fires.

Posted: 13 Sep 2015 12:13 AM PDT

Impian Malaysia proudly presents to you the Impian Kampung Run! It's both very meaningful and fun!
After 5 months of hard work, hand in hand with the locals from Kampung Muk Ayun (previously known as Kampung Sait), Kampung Sting and Kampung Nyegol, Impian Sarawak has successfully built a 6.5km basic road for 65 families.
To celebrate the joy, we would like to invite you to join the Impian Kampung Run!
