Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 6.7.2013
There should be an immediate release and restoration of democratically elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi. The forcible removal of the democratically elected President is a naked coup d'etat by the military that violates the popular will of the majority of Egyptians who had given Morsi a popular mandate of 52% in free elections last year.
DAP expresses surprise that so-called defenders of democracy like Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, not only justifies the military coup d'etat but warns that change is dangerous and brings about instability as well as affect economic progress. Democracy is the best form of government to prevent corruption and violation of basic human rights. Economic prosperity and reducing income inequality can only be achieved by ensuring increasing transparency, accountability and competency as well freedom instead of choosing cronies, practicing nepotism and oppression.
In the choice between the bullet and the ballot, it remains to be seen whether Najib's confidence that Egypt's economic problems will be solved by the end of democracy and citizens participation in decision-making by the unelected military.
Sarawak Chief Minister Chief Minister Tan Sri Taib Mahmud Must Explain The Reason For Barring Clare Rewcastle Brown From Entering Sarawak Or Else Confirm Suspicions That He Has Everything To Hide About The Corruption Allegations Against Him and His Family.
Sarawak Chief Minister Chief Minister Tan Sri Taib Mahmud must explain the reason for barring Clare Rewcastle Brown, the sister in law of a former British Prime Minister, from entering Sarawak or else confirm suspicions that he has everything to hide about the corruption allegations against him and his family. DAP is shocked that Taib Mahmud is abusing his powers of immigration for personal reasons by preventing an opponent from entering the state to expose financial improprieties.
I have met Rewcastle Brown in London and she struck me as a conscientious defender of justice, right over wrong and freedom of choice. She has an abiding love for Sarawak because she was born and had lived in the state. Instead of appreciating Rewcastle for this unusual passion for Sarawak, she is now being victimised because she dared to stand up for justice and integrity against the Sarawak Chief Minister. The former BBC journalist is the founder of the influential blog, Sarawak Report and Radio Free Sarawak, which are both critical of the chief minister.
Taib must understand that his actions, born out of personal vendetta against Rewcastle, will not only put Sarawak but also Malaysia in bad light. If Taib has nothing to hide, then he should come clean and answer the evidence systematically put up by Rewcastle of the natural resources in a beautiful state that is repeatedly "robbed" by the cronies of Taib Mahmud.
