SEREMBAN: Fire razed a school administrative office and a student dormitory block at 10th mile of Jalan Labu, here, on Thursday night.

However, there were no casualties in the 9.30pm incident, which occurred at the 56-year-old Pusat Pendidikan Islam Al-Irsyad.

The school's principal, Shaifudin Maulup, was away in Tampin delivering a ceramah when the fire occurred.

He was informed of the fire by his wife Sharifah Norasyida Syed Nordin, who is also the headmistress of Sekolah Rendah Tahfiz Al-Irsyad.

"I rushed back to the school, but by the time I arrived firemen had already put out the fire.

"I was sad to see religious books, old "kitab", important documents and teaching equipment destroyed in the fire."

The fire at one of the dormitory blocks also left 20 of the school students without a roof over their heads.

"I estimate the losses at around RM30,000, but now the main problem is where to place all 20 students who stayed in the damaged block when they return for school next week."

The school was opened by the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein in 1968, two years before he went on to become the country's second Prime Minister in 1970.

The school has 221 tahfiz students with 45 of them staying at its dormitories, 116 students of Kelas al-Quran and Fardu Ain (KAFA), 22 daily tahfiz students, and 38 children enrolled in its Islamic kindergarten.

Negri Sembilan Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Safety Section) Jamaluddin Marawi said a fire engine with eight personnel from the Seremban 2 Fire Station was sent to put out the fire at the school.

"They managed to control the fire within five minutes and doused it in 20 minutes. We are still investigating the cause of the fire," he said when contacted yesterday.
