Motorists and other road users have been complaining about the missing drain covers along the elevated stretch of the Jalan Duta highway.
Segambut member of parliament Lim Lip Eng said he had been receiving complaints from the public over the past two months. Lim said he had forwarded the matter to City Hall (DBKL) but the local authority had refused to take charge.
"Two months ago, Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said he would look into the matter," he claimed. Raja Nong Chik, according to Lim, had said that the metal manhole covers would be replaced with concrete ones.
"About 10 drain covers were stolen. The only one left is at the end of the elevated highway."
Lim urged the government to enact an act that would deter thieves from selling the metal to scrap yards.
"Scrap metal is currently sold for at least 80 sen per kg. People who steal drain and manhole covers and other metal stuff should be punished," he said.
Nothing that uncovered drain and manholes could endanger motorists, Lim urged the authorities to act promptly.
