Kelantan Menteri Besar Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has decided to go ahead with a libel suit against UMNO-owned daily New Straits Times and several others over a report labeling him "father of kafir" (infidel).

Kelantan PAS legal bureau head Hisham Fauzi said documents for the suit would be filed next week, after the parties involved failed to apologise to Nik Aziz.

Besides the NST, the others named are former inspector general of police Abdul Rahim Noor, and journalists Rahmah Ghazali, Lim Poh Lean and Nik Imran Abdullah.

The parties have been among others told to publish their apology on the front page of NSTand on six other pages, as well as to take up a full-page apology in either Berita Harian or Utusan Malaysia.

The notice also demands a RM1 million compensation to be paid as settlement.

In the report on page 6 of the paper's May 8 edition, NST blasted the heading "Nik Mat is father of kafir(infidel)", and attributed the statement to Rahim.

According to the paper, Rahim was reacting to a comment by the PAS Murshidul Am defending those who participated at the mammoth April 28 rally for electoral reforms in Kuala Lumpur as fulfilling their Islamic obligation.

Rahim however clarified in a letter to the paper that he had not uttered the words, but had only questioned PAS's association with DAP.

But hours after the report's publication drew widespread condemnations, Rahmah, whose byline appeared on the libelous story, wrote on her Twitter that she had played no role in the article.

Other than denials, none of the parties had come forward to issue any official apology. Earlier this week, PAS Youth issued an ultimatum to NST to retract its report or face large-scale protests organised by the wing.
