Land allocation for building new Chinese vernacular schools

English translation of my column article which originally published in China Press on Oct 8.

During the MCA's AGM held on 2nd October, its president Dr Chua Soi Lek announced in the Q & A session that MCA has successfully fought for and obtained 2 parcels of land in Selangor originally allocated for national primary schools (SRK) to be converted to 2 new Chinese national primary schools (SJKC), namely SJKC Sungai Long and SJKC Kajang Utama. MCA was only waiting for the DPM cum Education Minister to sign off the relevant documents before making a public announcement of this achievement.

2 weeks have gone by and yet there is no announcement. What is causing the delay? Has the DPM actually signed the authorization documents? Or is it the documents have been signed but its announcement is pending a “suitable and strategic” moment?

Promises of SJKC Sungai Long and SJKC Kajang Utama were initially made by the ex-MCA president Ong Ka Ting on January30, 2008. No progress has been made whatsoever for the past 3 years. With GE13 upon us, the status of these SJKC has been upgraded from “verbal promises” to “there is a sign”. The rate of progress is consistent with previous trends i.e. it takes “1 GE to get a verbal promise”, “1GE to get a ground breaking ceremony” and “1 GE to get work started”. With such frustrating and epic rate of progress, why and how could one rejoice?

To raise one’s blood pressure higher, Chua Soi Lek did not stop at claiming credit but fabricate false accusations by placing the land issue entirely on the Pakatan state government’s court.

According to Chua, “This is a Pakatan controlled state. Normal procedure calls for the federal government to allocate funds, state government to provide land but now, the federal government have to do both.”
