[Malaysiakini] Nurul receives threat to kidnap daughter

Posted: 13 May 2011 03:50 AM PDT

Karpal Singh, Teresa Kok, Wong Ho Leng, Tony Pua, myself and many other PR leaders have been the victims of death threat but sadly, none of the culprit was ever brought to the book. The inaction, indifference and inefficiency of the police is one the reasons why such cowardly action is happening repeatedly. Home Minister Hishammuddin and Inspector-General of Police must explain their failure to all Malaysians.
~Abdul Rahim Sabri

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar today lodged a police report at Dang Wangi police station over an anonymous SMS she received threatening the kidnap of her daughter.

NONEAccording to Nurul Izzah, the first SMS she received on Wednesday morning while she was in Doha, Qatar said her daughter would receive the same fate as Sharlinie Mohd Nashar, a five-year-old girl who went missing while playing with her sister near her house in Petaling Jaya three years ago.

“The threat was that my daughter would receive the same fate as the missing girl if I continue to support my father, Anwar Ibrahim (opposition leader and PKR de facto leader), and that I would not be able to save my daughter,” she lamented.

“The person (who sent the SMS) also sent another SMS yesterday afternoon asking me to force my father to resign from politics or else something would happen to my daughter.”

In her police report, Nurul Izzah said she received another threatening SMS that “something bad” will happen to her daughter if she continues to support her father.

She was accompanied by her mother and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, three lawyers and 15 supporters.

Nurul Izzah has a three-year-old daughter Raja Nur Safiyah and a two-year-old son, Raja Harith.

The girl Sharlinie referred to the SMS could be Sharlinie Mohd Nashar, five, who went missing while playing in front of her home in Taman Medan, Petaling Jaya in 2008. She has not been found since.

The incident happened after another girl, Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, went missing in September 2007, and was found murdered and her body placed in a bag several months later.

The controversial SMS which Nurul Izzah received read: “yb nurul, berhati2,jangan terus menerus menyokong ayah yb, dsai.,kerana bimbang ada yg sakit hati nak jadikan nasib anak yb mcm sharlinie. oleh itu sebelum apa2 terjadi, yb bercakaplah benar walaupun pahit tentang ayah yb, dgn ini yb dapat selamatkan anak yb. disamping itu yb dapat halang ayah yb dari terus tipu rakyat, berhenti dari politik dan selesaikan masalah peribadi. jadilah ibu yg penyayang dan anak yg bertanggungjawab.”

[Malaysian Insider] Ministry warning against Utusan ‘insufficient’, says Serdang MP

~ By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal
Teo: The Prime Minister must convince Malaysians that Utusan Malaysia does not enjoy full legal immunity by taking stern action against the editors and reporters involved for their irresponsible behaviour.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 — DAP wants Datuk Seri Najib Razak to take sterner action against Utusan Malaysia over its “Christian Malaysia” report, saying that a mere home ministry warning letter is insufficient.

The Umno daily was reprimanded by the ministry for publishing an unsubstantiated front-page article alleging a Christian plot to usurp Islam as the religion of the federation. The story sparked a furore among the country’s majority Muslims and minority Christians.

On Saturday, Utusan Malaysia carried a front-page article headlined “Kristian agama rasmi?” (Christianity the official religion?), claiming the DAP was conspiring with Christian leaders to take over Putrajaya and abolish Islam as the religion of the federation.

The report, based entirely on unsubstantiated blog postings by two pro-Umno bloggers, charged DAP with sedition for allegedly trying to change the country’s laws to allow a Christian prime minister.

DAP leaders said today that Utusan must also make a formal apology for its “erroneous” reporting.

“The Prime Minister must convince Malaysians that Utusan Malaysia does not enjoy full legal immunity by taking stern action against the editors and reporters involved for their irresponsible behaviour.

“A reprimand letter requires no follow-up action by the newspaper, as compared with a demand to show cause, and is akin to just a slap on the wrist,” said DAP Assistant National Publicity Secretary Teo Nie Ching in a statement.

Teo, who is a Christian said that the Prime Minister should not practice double standards when dealing with Utusan and that all newspapers should be subjected to the same level of scrutiny.
