[Malaysiakini] Psychiatrist: Teoh Beng Hock in 'lowest risk' of suicide group

My friend did not commit suicide.

If Teoh Beng Hock had killed himself... things would have likely happened to him to undermine his psychological stability and to frighten him literally to death, a forensic psychiatrist opined today

According to the report from Dr Paul E Mullen, which was submitted to the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) investigating the political aide's death, Teoh was classified to be in the “lowest risk group”

NONEMullen (right), a professor of forensic psychiatry at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, was engaged by the Bar Council to determine Teoh's personality and state of mind in order to assist the RCI resolving the circumstances surrounding and contributing to his death

“Inquires made from those interviewed suggest that Teoh was a well-organised, tidy man with a tendency to be a perfectionistic

“No evidence was found, however, of dysfunctional obsessional traits or unusual rigidity

“In my opinion, what we learned of Teoh's personality and behaviour do not suggest any increased risk of suicide

“In brief, it is my opinion that Teoh Beng Hock was firmly in the lowest risk group for suicide when he was taken into MACC custody,” Mullen said.

He described suicide as common in cases of depressive illness and among people with impulsive or disorganised personalities, especially those taken into custody for the first time.

NONE"Though in certain circumstances, rigid obsessional personalities may also be vulnerable,” said Mullen, adding that the states of mind usually associated with suicide are primarily despair, fear, anger and shame. He also said that suicide was uncommon among those with “robust social networks in the form of close family ties, a range of friends and positive work relationship”. This is first time findings of psychiatrists were presented in the investigation into Teoh's death.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) engaged consultant forensic psychiatrist Dr Badi'ah Yahya and community psychiatrist Dr Nor Hayati Ali for a similar assessment
