The “Syok Sendiri” Syndrome

English translation of my column article which originally published in China Press on Sept 27.

For those who are not aware, this “SS” syndrome I am referring to is the “Syiok Sendiri” Syndrome. A polite definition would be “self-glorification” and the Malaysian political arena is filled with such persons who "derive self-pleasure from self-praise".

Recently, MCA President Chua Soi Lek stated that if any MCA elected representatives fail to perform a year after GE13, the people could voice their dissatisfaction to MCA and the party would instruct those elected representatives to resign so that a by-election could be held and the people could choose again.

At first glance, this directive seems to reflect Chua Soi Lek’s intention to respect the wishes of the voters, but one will quickly realise that his idea is totally impractical and impossible to implement.

This is because no one is perfect. Which politician can please every single voter in a constituency? By relying on feedback and response from voters as a performance yardstick, how many complaints will need to be lodged before one is considered as "failing to make the grade"?

【念念有辞】SS 症候群

SS，是syok sendiri的简称，文艺一点的翻译是“自我陶醉”，说白了一点就是“自己讲自己爽”。放眼望去，政治圈中这样的案例还真不少。

日前，马华总会长蔡细历表示，下届大选中选的马华国州议员，服务一年后若做得不好，人民可以向马华表明意愿，马华将指示该议员辞职，让人民重选民意代表。

可行性基本上不存在

咋看之下这似乎符合蔡细历所谓尊重选民的做法，可是不需要经过3分钟的思考就知道，这样的宣布可行性基本上是不存在的。

人无完人，有哪一个政治人物可能讨尽所有选民的欢心？将人民的回馈充作表现好坏的指标，哪么要有多少人投诉该议员才算表现不及格？

因为不满纳吉处理净选盟709大游行的粗暴方式，网民在面子书上开设了一个要求纳吉辞职的页面，至今点击支持者多达216,824人。依循蔡细历尊重选民的逻辑，蔡总觉得纳吉是否应该辞职？或则蔡总会说：“216,824还不到大马2700万人口的百分之一，首相当然不用辞职！”

【南洋商报】大学岭两个月逾10窃案 . 居民人心惶惶促警加强巡逻

On September 25, accompanied by Serdang MP Saudari Teo Nie Ching and Seri Kembangan State Assemblyman cum State Government Exco Saudara Ean Yong Hian Wah and Taman Universiti Indah Zhong Yuan Festival Organising Committee members, 30 victims of house break-in cases at Taman Universiti Indah have called a press conference to highlight the worsening crime index in their residential area. 9 cases of house break-in were reported during Hari Raya period at Taman Universiti Indah, Seri Kembangan.

（沙登25日讯）沙登大学岭花园治安不靖，今年8月与9月连续发生10多宗破门行窃罪案，超过千户居民感到人心惶惶，担心成为受害者，要求警方加强巡逻！

据了解，除了晚间爆窃案，一些胆大包天的窃匪竟然在光天化日下破门行窃，曾有邻居于下午3时，从楼上住家目击4名华裔窃匪破门干案，干案手法熟练。

事主受访时透露，大学岭干案的窃匪一般专偷最容易脱手的财物，如手机、相机、手提电脑、金饰，现款绝不放过偷走，一般损失数千令吉至2万令吉的财物。
