Two Different Versions: Why Did The Star Replace an Initially Correct Report of DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng’s Remarks on Hudud Law Dated 25 September 2011 With an Inaccurate And False Version On 26 September 2011?

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 07:51 PM PDT

I am instructed to refer to your news reports in the online version of The Star that carried two different versions on the above matter.

In the first version, dated 25 September 2011, a correct report was filed (see below). In it, Martin Carvalho correctly quoted Lim Guan Eng as saying that the party's entire Central Executive Committee (CEC) leadership would resign if anyone can prove that Hudud law would be implemented in the Common Policy Framework (CPF) or Buku Jingga that has been presented to the public.

In other words, if Hudud law was inscribed in and prescribed by the CPF or Buku Jingga, then our CEC leaders would resign en masse from their party posts in the DAP.

However, this was replaced by a different version on 26 September 2011 (also see below) that implied wrongly and falsely that Lim had threatened the resignation of the party's top leadership from the Pakatan Rakyat Leadership Council if Hudud law was found to be in the CPF or Buku Jingga.

This is categorically untrue as Lim had neither made any threats to quit the Pakatan Rakyat leadership council, nor the Pakatan Rakyat in general. All Lim had said was that the entire CEC leadership would resign from their party posts to take full responsibility if Hudud law was found to be included in the CPR or Buku Jingga.

Kindly explain the contradictions and conflicting premises of your two articles, and how an initially correct report had come to be replaced by one that was imaginatively concocted.

Sincerely,

Zairil Khir Johari
Political Secretary to the DAP Secretary-General

Guan Eng: DAP top leadership will quit if hudud law included in Pakatan policy

By MARTIN CARVALHO

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP’s top leadership will resign en masse if hudud law or the formation of an Islamic state are ever incorporated in Pakatan Rakyat’s common policy framework or “Buku Jingga”.

“If there is any mention that we want to implement hudud law in our common policy framework and Buku Jingga, the party’s entire central committee will resign,” party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng told reporters after officiating DAP’s Federal Territories convention here Sunday.

He said the pact between DAP, PAS and PKR had been agreed upon in “black and white” and was aimed at collaboration on common issues such as justice, the fight against corruption and upholding ruman rights.

“Hudud law was never included in Pakatan’s common policy framework and if it is not included, it should not be part of the agenda,” he said.

DAP and PAS are at loggerheads over the implementation of hudud law and formation of an Islamic state, after PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Seri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat recently called for their implementation in Kelantan.

PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim shocked his Pakatan allies when he openly supported PAS’ plan to implement hudud law in Kelantan.

However, DAP national chairman Karpal Singh said his party had never accepted hudud or the idea of setting up an Islamic state and neither had Pakatan made an official stand supporting it.

DAP leaders threaten to quit Pakatan council

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP’s top leadership will resign en masse from the top Pakatan council if hudud law or the formation of an Islamic state are included in the Pakatan Rakyat’s Buku Jingga common policy framework.

"If there is any mention that we want to implement hudud law in our common policy framework and the Buku Jingga, the party’s entire central committee will resign," DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng told reporters after opening DAP Federal Territories convention here yesterday.

He said the Pakatan pact among DAP, PAS and PKR had been agreed upon in "black and white" and aimed at collaboration on common issues such as justice, the fight against corruption and upholding human rights.

"Hudud law was never included in Pakatan’s common policy framework and, if it is not included, it should not be part of the agenda," he said.

"Each one may have their own views on respective issues but that does not mean we cannot cooperate and collaborate on common issues," he said.

On PAS being adamant on including hudud law or the formation of an Islamic state in Pakatan’s common policy framework for the next general election, Lim said DAP would not agree to such amendments.
