[Malaysian Insider] MACC unreasonable to hold Teoh overnight, says RCI

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 05:05 AM PDT

Muhammad Shafee, lawyer for MACC, explained to RCI that he couldn't produce the diaries of investigations and the books were destroyed as the notes were typed out into a 119 statement. But how do we know that the notes typed out remain the same and not manipulated? Could the notes be changed quickly, before an inquest takes place? What guarantees are in place to ensure the facts remain the same?

KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 — It seemed unreasonable for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to detain Teoh Beng Hock overnight, said the royal panel investigating Teoh’s death today.

Selangor MACC investigation unit head Hairul Ilham Hamzah told the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) today that Teoh was held overnight because of four suspicious-looking invoices found in the latter’s laptop.

“It seems (that) reasons to prolong his release are not reasonable,” said RCI chairman Tan Sri James Foong at the inquiry today.

Foong pointed out that the DAP aide had said that copies of the invoices, which could not be found during the MACC overnight interview, may be found in the latter’s office.

“But MACC officers say no need. I can get the (supporting) documents from the Land Office. If (you) think like that, why not release Teoh Beng Hock?” asked Foong.

“In normal MACC operations, we do overnight investigations,” said Hairul.

Teoh, 30, was found dead outside the then-Selangor MACC headquarters in Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, on July 16, 2009, after he was questioned overnight by anti-graft officers.

[Malay Mail] DAP not ignoring animal rights activists, says Serdang MP

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 04:32 AM PDT

~ REENA RAJ

KUALA LUMPUR: Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching said she was not at the DAP headquarters to receive a memorandum from about 20 animal rights activists on Saturday as she was not told about it.

The memorandum urged DAP to act against Teo and Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah for allegedly supporting "Serdang cat killer" Chao Xiao Wei.

However, the DAP office in Jalan Yew was closed, much to the chagrin of the group.

"I did not receive any call, SMS or email informing me they would be going to our headquarters in KL. I only found out about the gathering from media reports," said Teo, who was in Sarawak at the time.

"I contacted our office manager and he said he had not received any notice of the gathering. No one is trying to avoid anyone."

Teo said the headquarters was opened from Monday to Friday and closed during weekends.

On allegations she and Ean Yong were protecting Chao, Teo said they merely provided a platform for her to convey her apology.

"We are not siding with or protecting Chao. She told us she wanted to apologise for her behaviour, so we gave her a channel to do so.

"The animal rights activists can choose not to accept Chao's apology but that doesn't mean she does not have the right to make one."

Teo said she and Ean Yong never made any request to the authorities not to take action against Chao.
