MPs were asked, among others, their opinions on the Internal Security Act, whether Malaysia should be an Islamic or secular state, and what they believed their roles as MPs were. A total of 113 MPs replied and the results of the MP Watch: Eye on Parliament project have now been compiled in a book titled Understanding the Dewan Rakyat.

[Sinar Harian] Simpang bahaya di Cheras Batu 11 cetus resah

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 09:38 AM PDT

[Malaysiakini] RM11.2 million spent for the past 16 by-elections since 2008

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 04:43 AM PDT

The figure provided by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz in the Parliament this morning contradicts with his answer given earlier. In an answer to Loke Siew Fook on 12 November 2009, Nazri said the costs of EC for Bagan Pinang by-election was RM284,324.79. But now he said the total expenditure was RM449,485.00. So which figure is correct?

Assuming that the figure given this morning is accurate, I also notice that the costs of by election increased tremendously since 2010. The cost of the last by election in 2009, the 9th by-election in our country ie the by-election of Bagan Pinang was RM449,485. But the costs for the 10th by-election also the 1st by-election in 2010, ie the by-election of Hulu Selangor, was RM1,200,000.

Well, you may say that the cost for Hulu Selangor by-election was higher because it was a by-election for parliamentary seat. But check the costs for by-elections of Permatang Pauh, Kuala Terengganu and Bukit Gantang, the costs was RM409,000, RM325,416 and RM460.971 respectively!

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz told the Dewan Rakyat today that handouts during election campaigns cannot be considered corruption.

Such assistance, he said, were part of BN manifesto's to help the people.

"We have promised to fulfil (our manifesto) ... sewing machine assistance for instance, if it is not given during the election, it will be given after the election. It's the same. Is this an offence?

NONE"We cannot stop giving out assistance (during election) because we will still be providing such assistance after the election," he said in reply to Ab Azizi Ab Kadir (PKR-Ketereh) during question time.

In reply to another one of Ab Azizi's question, Nazri confirmed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had received six complaints about electoral inducements between 2008 and 2010.

RM11 mil spent on polls

Meanwhile, Nazri also revealed that the government has spent a total of RM11.2 million over the course of 16 by-elections from 2008.
