KUALA LUMPUR, 23 APRIL, 2012: PAS Selangor deputy commissioner Khalid Samad describes his party colleague Nasharudin Mat Isa's statement calling for PAS to lead Bersih, replacing current co-chairperson, Datuk S Ambiga as a view of an outsider.

"He (Nasharuddin) is not getting himself really involved in party meetings of late, so it is a view of an outsider," said Khalid when contacted by Malaysian Digest.

The Star yesterday reported that Bachok MP and Nasharudin had hit out at Ambiga, saying she is not fit to lead because of her ties with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) community.

The former PAS deputy president said PAS should instead take the lead in the Bersih 3.0 demonstration planned for Saturday.

Khalid said that PAS acknowledges that Bersih 3.0 is a public movement and political parties should not intervene but instead only support its cause and demands.

"It's (Bersih) a people's movement. The public is keen to keep it that way, so we must respect them. They should choose their own leader.

"As PAS is a political party that supports the movement and its call for clean and fair election doesn't mean that we have the right to determine major decisions (of Bersih)," Khalid added.

Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Mahfuz Omar said the civil society movement should be respected and free from political interventions.

"We support Bersih and its eight demands because they call for a fair election in Malaysia. That doesn't mean that we have to also be associated it with LGBT issues directly," said Mahfuz.
