Stop playing with regional sentiments, Pakatan tells Saksama

Posted: 12 Jul 2016 10:49 PM PDT

Sarawak DAP Chairman Chong Chieng Jen says previous state elections have proven that Sarawakians have rejected such regionalist sentiments.

PETALING JAYA: At the end of the day, the people's trust and confidence in a political party is earned through hard work and the party's principles, Sarawak DAP Chairman Chong Chieng Jen said.
Chong was responding to recently formed Opposition coalition Gabungan Rakyat Saksama (Saksama) spokesperson Lina Soo who had stated that the seven-member coalition would only work with Pakatan Harapan if the peninsula-based coalition stayed out of Sabah and Sarawak.
Speaking to FMT, Chong said DAP was established in Sarawak four decades ago and he added "our track record has proven that DAP is a trustworthy Opposition party with principles".
He reminded Soo, who is also the president of Sarawak Reform Party (STAR), that her party did badly in the previous state polls and all its candidates lost their deposits.
"It (STAR) played with regionalist sentiments in the recent polls as well in the past few elections and this was rejected by Sarawakians.
"In any party, you have to earn the people's confidence over time. There is no overnight success party."
Saksama's component parties are Sarawak Reform Party (STAR), Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru), Parti Sejahtera Angkatan Perpaduan Sabah (Sapu), Pertubuhan Perpaduan Rakyat Kebangsaan Sabah (Perpaduan), Sabah-based Malaysia United People's Party (MUPP), Parti Kebangsaan Sabah (PKS), and the People's Alternative Party (PAP), from the peninsula.
Sarawak Amanah Chairman Fidzuan Zaidi echoed similar sentiments, saying that it was completely unnecessary to promote regionalism in politics.
"The pact (Pakatan Harapan) in no way limits peninsula-based parties from being active in Sabah and Sarawak."
Fidzuan also said if Sarawakians and Sabahans find peninsula-based parties to be appealing, they should have no qualms about supporting them.
"Why do we need to build such barriers? Do we not trust the people to make the right choice?"
PKR Vice-President Darrell Leiking also disagreed with Soo's notion, noting that members of any party from Sabah were in fact Sabahans themselves.
"I personally disagree when politics is parochialised this way, that a party is restricted to contest based on the reason that parties from Sabah are the only ones which know better about Sabah."
Leiking also pointed out that PKR had given autonomy to its Sabah chapter to run the party in the state.
He noted that Article 5.8 of the party's constitution states that the party is committed to fight for equal partnership between Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula, as contained in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
"Hence, PKR in Sabah is made up of Sabahans who are as passionate as any other Sabahans in any political party here."
Previously, Soo had said Saksama was set up to address the failure of current Opposition parties to pose a stiff challenge to Barisan Nasional, adding that the Pakatan Harapan alliance was now fragmented and falling apart.
With more parties expected to join Saksama, Soo said the coalition had applied to the Registrar of Societies to formally register as a political pact.

Chong suggests govt file amendment Bill

Posted: 10 Jul 2016 10:44 PM PDT

KUCHING: State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen yesterday suggested that the BN government file an amendment Bill in Parliament for Sarawak to be restored to its original position as a region.
He said the DAP was willing to support the amendment. He reckoned that together with MPs from BN and PKR, it would have more than the two-thirds majority needed to amend the Federal Constitution.
"We in DAP have already made our stand very clear. Even (DAP secretary general) Lim Guan Eng has already made his stand that DAP will support the amendment of the constitution to restore Sarawak's position as a region, rather than a state in Malaysia," he told reporters when met at Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah's Hari Raya open house here yesterday.
"BN has 122 MPs (of which 28 are from Sarawak) and DAP has 38 MPs. I believe that PKR will support as well. This means we will have more than two-thirds majority to amend the constitution, so don't just talk only. Do it in Parliament."
Chong was commenting on Minister of Local Government Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian's call on Saturday to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem to refer to Sarawak as a region in Malaysia and not a state within the federation when negotiating with the federal government on the state's devolution of power.
Dr Sim, who is also SUPP president, said North Borneo (Sabah), Singapore, the Federation of Malaya, and Sarawak were the four regions that formed Malaysia in 1963; hence, he argued that if Sarawak was serious about fighting for its autonomy and reclaiming its status as a region in the nation as written in the Malaysia Agreement, Adenan should take the lead in making this stand.
"When talking about Sarawak's fight for autonomy, I see that Sarawak is still referring to itself as a state in Malaysia. That is not consistent. Sarawak should refer to itself as just Sarawak from now on, not Negeri Sarawak (Sarawak state), in order to be seen as serious in fighting for autonomy," said Dr Sim.
Dr Sim also advocated dropping the word 'state' when referring to Sarawak's legislative assembly or government.
Chong said initially in the original Federal Constitution Article 1, it was provided that Malaysia shall constitute four regions, namely Sabah, Sarawak, Federal State of Malaya and Singapore.
"But in 1976, there was a constitutional amendment whereby that clause was amended to 'Malaysia shall constitute 13 states namely…including Sabah and Sarawak and one territory'. That is where the status of Sarawak being a region has been relegated to a state." Chong explained.
In view of this, Chong reiterated that the government filed an amendment Bill.
"After all, you are the government and that the status of Sarawak ought to be and can only be restored through the amendment of the constitution. There's no point for you to talk outside.
"We call upon the BN government to put in an amendment Bill, failing which I will move the motion (in Parliament)."

Posted: 10 Jul 2016 10:39 PM PDT

Local Councils including MBKS should help the freak storm victims to rebuild their houses and roofs.

Posted: 09 Jul 2016 05:32 PM PDT

Local Councils including MBKS should help the freak storm victims to rebuild their houses and roofs. This will expedite the re-construction work which, if left to individuals, such effort to rebuild the houses and roof top will take much longer time.

There is nothing wrong for the councils to mobilise its resources to help rebuild these houses as the houses were damaged by natural disaster.

The excuse given by Dr Sim Kui Hian that these are "private property" is not valid reason, for government agencies throughout the world have known to help natural disaster victims to rebuild their homes.

Furthermore, this is the little benefits and securities that we tax-payers are entitled for paying our taxes.

Therefore, I call upon Dr. Sim to prioritise the re-construction of these damaged houses as the work of the ministry of local governments under his charge instead of bickering and fighting with the UPP over the appointment of local councillors.

The fighting with UPP over the appointment of councillors can wait, but to these storm victims, everyday's delay is an unnecessary ordeal.

Posted: 09 Jul 2016 05:29 PM PDT

Posted: 07 Jul 2016 07:46 PM PDT

Posted: 03 Jul 2016 10:53 PM PDT

Stampin residents protest against telco tower in their area

Posted: 03 Jul 2016 05:16 PM PDT

The residents of Stampin Tengah, Hakka Avenue and the surrounding area are up against the erection of a tele-communication tower in the middle of their housing estate.

Yesterday, the residents have come together with the MP for Stampin, YB Julian Tan and I, to stage a protest at the construction site. Thereafter, the residents embarked on the collection of signatures from all the other residents to protest against the construction of the said tower right in the middle of their residential area.

Their main concern is the risk to their health from the long-term and constant exposure to the radiation and electromagnetic waves that will be emitted from the transmission equipment to be attached to the said tower in future when it is in use.

After the collection of the signatures, YB Julian Tan will assist the residents to submit the letter of protest to the Chief Minister, the Director of Lands and Surveys and Sacofa Sdn Bhd on Monday.

The authorities should not approve the construction of such telco-tower right in the middle of a densely populated residential area.  A responsible government should respect the views of the residents when it comes to such matter.

In Sarawak, the State Government has given a blanket approval to Sacofa Sdn Bhd to plan, construct and operate telco-towers.  As a private company with profit as its main objective, it is little wonder that Sacofa does not take heed to the concern of the residents and the people when it comes to constructing telco towers.  All it matters to Sacofa is "Profit".

Therefore, when the people start to come together to complain the erection of telco tower in their housing estate, the Government must step in to restrain Sacofa.

Erection of such telco towers should be governed by similar guidelines as the erection of high voltage power lines.  It should avoid the densely populated residential areas.

As such, I call upon the State Government to respect the wishes of the residents in the area and to immediately stop the construction of the said telco tower.

Posted: 03 Jul 2016 05:08 PM PDT

DAP Sarawak strongly condemns the political persecution of Lim Guan Eng, the Secretary-General of DAP, by the BN Government.

Posted: 30 Jun 2016 09:27 PM PDT

DAP Sarawak strongly condemns the political persecution of Lim Guan Eng, the Secretary-General of DAP, by the BN Government.
We have every confidence in the integrity and innocence of Lim Guan Eng and will continue to support his leadership of the party despite the selective prosecution and all the smearing against him by the BN Government.
I would like to remind the MACC about the hundreds of thousands of acres of State land in Sarawak which were alienated to BN cronies without any open tender process and clearly at grossly below market value. An example of such malpractice is the recent alienation of the 267 acres of prime land in Batu Kawah to the BN cronies at less than 25% of the prevailing market price. I have also brought the matter up to the MACC, the Sarawak DUN as well as the Parliament. Yet till this day, no one is prosecuted or faces any consequence under the law.
This clear case of double standard on the part of the BN Government and the political persecution will only make us DAP Sarawak more resolved to continue our fight for a fair, just and democratic Malaysia for all Malaysians and our future generations.
The DAP Sarawak will not be cowed by the persecution and will stand firmly together with Lim Guan Eng and the National DAP.
In such times of oppression and persecution, I called upon all our members and supporters to remain calm and be united and steadfast in our struggle for a fair, just and democratic Malaysia.

Posted: 30 Jun 2016 09:20 PM PDT

Posted: 29 Jun 2016 08:23 PM PDT

DAP shocked Pan Borneo funding is from usual allocation

Posted: 29 Jun 2016 05:25 PM PDT

Chong Chieng Jen says Chief Minister Adenan Satem has confirmed that the cost of the Pan Borneo highway project could eat away at other development projects for state.

KUCHING: Sarawak DAP leader Chong Chieng Jen has refuted a statement by Public Works Minister Fadillah Yusof that the Opposition party was the only one stating the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway would divert funds from other development projects.
The federal-funded project, which spans Sarawak and Sabah, is estimated to cost RM27 billion, with RM14.2 billion allocated to Sarawak.
It will be implemented under the 11th Malaysian Plan (2016 to 2020).
Yesterday, Fadillah told reporters that his ministry would look into the allegation by Chong that the highway project would use funds that would otherwise be allocated to other development projects in the state.
"We are obtaining data on the matter. As soon as the data is collected, we will present the report to the chief minister for his review," Fadillah told reporters in Siol Kandis, Kuching, yesterday.
Chong today told reporters that Chief Minister Adenan Satem had already confirmed that the funds allocated for the Pan Borneo Highway would not be beyond the normal allocation for development for Sarawak.
He also refuted allegations that the Opposition made up the accusation.
"Fadillah said yesterday that he is going to verify the facts. And even before he can verify the facts, he's accusing me, saying the Opposition is making false statements," Chong told reporters at the state party headquarters in Kuching today.
"In fact the chief minister is the one who confirmed the matter. So, is Fadillah alleging that the chief minister was making a false statement in his winding-up speech?"
Chong referred to the Hansard of the state assembly on June 15, which recorded Adenan as confirming that the cost of the highway project would be subtracted from the normally allocated development funds.
"In fact you were saying (the) Federal Government is giving us with the right hand and taking away with the left hand," Adenan was quoted as saying in the Hansard, in reply to Chong in his winding-up speech.
"Yes, I agree, but we were under the impression then that it will not be subtracted from the usual development funds. Only now do we know.
"I am pursuing this point. I want it to be over and above what they usually provide for us," Adenan said.
Chong said despite being a fixed-deposit state for the Barisan government, Sarawak seems to have been taken for a ride over this matter.
From the First Malaysia Plan up to the 11th Malaysia Plan, the state government had allocated RM80.3 billion to implement development programmes and projects in the state while the Federal Government allocated RM70 billion.
In total, RM150.3 billion had been channelled to develop Sarawak.
